Botaniculum is a compendium of local wild and medicinal plants for Android smartphones and tablets.
Botaniculum is a perfect tool for plant identification, not only for botanists but for interested laymen as well.
The Botaniculum database knows about 7,000 plant names. It contains features of classification and detailed information regarding major domestic and wild growing plants, as well as medicinal plants. In addition, there are 2,500 large-format colour photos and illustrations in brilliant HD quality.
The wealth of information in Botaniculum corresponds to a textbook of more than 1,000 pages, yet this data collection fits into any pocket.
Botaniculum is easy and intuitive to use. In seven steps or less, even laymen will identify any native wild plant with the help of his or her smartphone (according to flower colour, flower shape, petals arrangement, leaf shape, arrangement of leaves, leaf edge and specific form). In addition, time of bloom and time of collection can be specified.
Photos can be added to each plant – taken with the smartphone’s camera or added from existing photo collections. The photos can be greatly enlarged on the Android device, while still maintaining detailed quality.
Many search functions and a fast full-text search option make it possible to use Botaniculum as a comprehensive and convenient reference. With a few clicks, the plants are sorted according to their properties, which include medicinal plants, culinary herbs, their use in homeopathy, flowering time, collection time, growth form (was soll das sein?), location and many more – the search possibilities are almost endless.
Numerous synonyms in the database allow the user to quickly locate plants by their popular or botanical names.
Botaniculum contains information about the healing effects of the more than 400 medicinal plants. Their applications and contraindications are listed, as well as their possible homeopathic use and other interesting details.
All information is available “offline” at any time after installing the Botaniculum App on your Android device: after installation, an internet connection is not necessary, therefore no connection costs will be incurred and the program functions of Botaniculum work in remote places.
• Android smartphone or tablet
• Android OS version 2.2 or higher
• 600MB (0.6 GB) of free storage
• 480 * 800 pixels screen resolution or higher
Before the first start of Botaniculum WIFI/WLAN should be set up on the Android and switched on.
When first starting the application loads about 2500 image files in HD quality from the Botaniculum web server. The download of images can be done only if there is a WIFI-/WLAN-connection. There are approximately 0.6 GB of storage capacity required on the Android device. The download of the image database can – take a few minutes – depending on the wireless speed. After downloading Botaniculum can be operated permanently offline. After that a connection to the Internet is no longer necessary.
The program part “determine plant” appears after the start of Botaniculum. Here the determination of the desired plant criteria can be entered:
1. Flower colour
2. Flower shape
4. Leaf shape
5. Leaf arrangement
7. Special form
Clicking on a list item will open a menu where the available plant features are displayed as icons.
Once one of these features is selected, they are listed in the other determining criteria, which meet the requirements and lead to hits in the search results. Once only a single plant appears as a result, this plant is automatically displayed.
It does not matter in which order the criteria are entered. If you are not sure when choosing a feature, you can skip this step without any problem. Clicking „Start Search“ at the bottom of the screen time displays at any the list of those plants that match the search criteria. The final determination of this plant can then be made using the pictures, graphics and text information in Botaniculum.
If very few particulars are given, however, it happens that the list of plants in the search results is very long. For example, if only the flower colour “yellow” is selected and then you click “Start search„, several hundred plants will appear in the search results. In general, it is therefore useful to choose at least two or three criteria before clicking „Start search„.
In addition to the seven criteria Botaniculum offers many other powerful search capabilities as well. Plants can be selected with a few clicks of their healing effect to time of blooming time, time of collecting, and many other criteria. In this way Botaniculum not only serves for plant identification, but also as a convenient reference book and compendium of native wild and cultivated plants.
Using the “back“ button of Android, you can delete the entries and start the search again.
Note: The Botaniculum logo on the right side of the title bar has the same function as the “ back“ button of Android.
Full text search
By clicking on the title bar, you can always perform a full text search. This is the most powerful search function in Botaniculum. Who knows the English or botanical name will use this fastest way to this plant. In the full-text search any words or parts of words can be entered. By typing “ros“ can be found for example all plants of the rose family (Rosaceae), but also some more plants like the Rosmarinus officinalis, because this bears the popular name “rosemary”. So if you want to look for rose family, you should better enter „rose” to the full term or “ Rosaceae “ in the full text search.
After entering the search criteria and clicking „Start search” or by performing a full text search, the search result will appear in an alphabetical list of all plants that meet the search criteria.
The title bar of the number of hits will be listed in the search results.
The list of plants is sorted either by English or botanical name. This sorting process can be set in the settings themselves.
Clicking on a list entry takes you to the detail view of the plant (see below). Use the “back” button of Android to get back to plant identification.
Once a plant has been selected by clicking on the result, a multi-page detailed view with all the important information about the plant appears. The buttons at the bottom of the page are used to scroll to the first, previous, next, or last record in the results.
On the main page of the detail view you will find the most important information about a plant, as well as a reduced graph.
A full screen view of the image is obtained by clicking on it. In the full image view, it is possible to enlarge sections of the graph by using two fingers. Use the “back” button of Android to return to the detail view.
If the Android device is connected to the Internet via WIFI/WLAN, you can easily fall back on to additional information to the plant from the Internet: a simple click on the name of the plant in the detail view opens the Internet browser, to perform a Wikipedia or Google page that provides additional information about the plant.
In addition to the main page, additional pages that can be accessed by a horizontal swipe:
On the right of the main page you will find the information concerning the healing effect. You reache this page through a swipe from right to left. This information is available in more than 400 medicinal plants in Botaniculum.

A click on the icon opens the web browser and takes you directly to the search results of Google Image search.
In the second row of the image list is a camera icon. By clicking on this icon you will open the internal camera of Botaniculum.
With the Botaniculum camera, you can take own photos for a plant in a comfortable way. The operation of this camera we have kept as simple as possible. A click on the trigger on the screen is enough to take a photo.
If the camera of your Android device has a flash or continuous light, you can this turn on with a click on the flash icon. If the camera has an autofocus, the function is automatically activated.
The images are automatically stored in the correct size and at the right place, under the name of the respective plant and in a separate directory.
If you “hold” one of the own preview pictures, you open the menu of editing options. There you can delete your own images, replace, share, send by email or post them to the editors of Botaniculum ready for publication.

There are currently no photos or graphics in Botaniculum to a very few plants. But at least a photo or graphic is provided. In this case, a replacement image is displayed. It is always possible to replace the missing photo with your own.
